From PortableApps.com: "A portable app is a computer program that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any Windows computer. When your USB thumbdrive, portable hard drive, iPod or other portable device is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug, none of your personal data is left behind."

Let's gather all of the portable software on the Net. Make sure it is free.

This is the free version of Sketchup Pro (which costs about USD 500). Quoting from the website:

"SketchUp is a deceptively simple, amazingly powerful tool for creating, viewing, and modifying 3D ideas quickly and easily."

The drawing tools are not as precise and technical as those in other design software (like Anim8or), but they are much more intuitive. It is not featured as a "Portable" software, but you can copy the installed folder to a Flash drive and it will work just fine.

SyncBack is a backup program that can run from a Flash drive. The free version lacks features that are in the "SE" version. I use it to keep files in agreement between Flash drive, desktop computer and network storage.

Quoting from their page:

"SyncBack is our multi-award winning freeware program that helps you easily backup and synchronise your files to: the same drive; a different drive or medium (CDRW, CompactFlash, etc); an FTP server; a Network; or a Zip archive."

If you keep documents on your Flash drive, you'll want to have them sync with your hard drive as well.

I'm concerned that some of the software at portableapps.com, such as PortableThunderbird, hasn't been updated to the latest version for quite some time.
